Giant pandas are black and white bears that live in the mountains of China. The only other place to find them is in zoos. Their Latin name translates to “black and white cat foot”.
Although they are classified as carnivores or meat eaters, their diet consists mainly of bamboo. During the day, their main activity is eating as they have to consume a lot of bamboo to maintain their weight. Now and then they will eat small rodents to supplement their diets. An adult Panda weighs over 100 kilograms or 220 pounds.
Pandas are different from most other bears as they do not hibernate for the winter but move to lower elevations to find food when it gets cold.
They may look cute in photos but they are not friendly so you will want to cuddle with the stuffed toy variety only.
Here’s how to make a panda puppet with a lunch bag. When it isn’t in use, puff out the bottom of the bag to make the panda stand. Look here to see some real live Pandas.
Supplies:
- Brown paper lunch bag
- Variety of sizes of circle tracers
- Black, white and green construction paper
- Glue
- Scissors
- Pencil
Instructions:
-
Turn the paper bag upside down so the opening is on the bottom. The flat bottom of the bag will be the head. Lay the bag so the flap is facing you.
-
Cut out a large black circle and a smaller white circle to fit inside it. This is the body. Below the flap, glue on the black circle first and glue the white circle on top.
-
Cut out another circle in white and glue it on the flap. This is the face.
-
In black, cut out 4 small circles for the legs and two smaller ones for the ears.
-
Cut out two rectangles for the eye patches and a triangle for the nose. Draw on a mouth.
-
Cut a long strip of green paper for the bamboo. Cut strips into lengths that are approximately 15 cm. or 6 inches long. Draw lines across the width of the strips. Glue on the panda front paws to make it look like it is eating.
-
Open the bag’s bottom and make the panda stand or slip a hand into the opening and make it a puppet.
