Halloween is the best holiday. You don’t have to buy presents for anybody, you get to dress up (or not), and you get free candy. On top of all of that we get the thrill of scary movies to make us squirm and scream to celebrate Halloween. So what are the best movies to see this Halloween?

Paranormal Activity (PG-13) Paranormal Activity is getting a lot of buzz as this year’s Blair Witch Project. You know the standard scary movie plot fare; a young couple buys their first home and realizes it’s haunted. Roger Ebert has called Paranormal Activity, “an ingenious horror film. It’s so well made it’s truly scary.

Saw VI (R) Saw VI, can you believe it’s six already? The Saw movies are horror films about the character John Kramer, the Jigsaw Killer who tests his victims with puzzles or games before he kills them. Some might call it torture. And never fear, Saw fans, Saw VII is in the works.

Twilight: New Moon (PG-13) OK, maybe Twilight: New Moon is more romance movie than horror flick, but the vampire and werewolf themes keep New Moon totally appropriate for Halloween.

Zombieland (R) Zombies are hot! If you’re looking for a funny and scary movie, Zombieland is for you. The movie focuses on a band of post-apocalyptic survivors who must fight off zombies. You know it’s gotta be fun when the tagline of Zombieland is: “Nut up or shut up. ” (Extra treat: Bill Murray has a cameo as himself.) Zombieland has a fairly high rating of 8.3 on the International Movie Data Base which indicates this movie is your best bet in theaters at Halloween.

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant (PG-13) Based on three young adult novels by Darren Shan, Cirque du Freak tells the tale of a teenager who accidentally breaks a truce between two tribes of ancient vampires. Sound fun? Get the popcorn. Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant stars John C. Reilly, Willem Dafoe, Salma Hayek and Jane Krakowski.

Drag Me To Hell (PG-13) This horror comedy directed by Sam Raimi is about a bank employee who is cursed by an irate customer and consequentially attacked by a demon. Ultimately the demon wants to drag his victim, the main character to hell.
