Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are so successful that even celebrities (and would-be celebs) are using these sites to keep in touch with their fans. At the 2009 Teen Choice Awards, Ellen DeGeneres was voted Favorite Celebrity Twit for her witty and daily updates on all things Ellen.

So who are the most active celebrities on Twitter?

Celebrity Tweet is a great place to stalk celebrities on the internet. On the day I wrote this article, Alyssa Milano had already left 40 Tweets, including a tweet about Twitter, an “interesting theory on why Twitter implemented the new RT feature." Huh. Milano also averages about 23.7 Tweets Per Day or TPD. (according to Celebrity Tweet) Celebrities who Twitter are a diverse group that include Wyclef Jean, Ryan Seacrest, Pink, Moby, Yoko Ono, Taylor Swift, Paris Hilton, Oprah Winfrey, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Paula Abdul and Judah Friedlander. The most followed celebrities on Twitter include Ashton Kutcher, Britney Spears, Ellen DeGeneres, Barrack Obama and Oprah Winfrey.

More Than Just Social Networking

For celebrities, Twitter is much more than a social networking site, it is a place where they can further market themselves to a fast-growing and young niche, one of the most desirable and lucrative demographics to capture. Twitter gives the appearance that celebrities are the individuals making the actual tweeter updates, while in some cases the tweets are more clearly generic announcements of events, tours or appearances by the celebs.

Twitpic

Twitpic allows Twitter members to upload photos to share with their fans and audience. For example, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals are packing to go on tour. Grace Potter put a question on Twitter with a link to a photograph of her yoga ball, asking if she should bring it on her tour with her. (My answer to Grace: Do you have room for it? I’m thinking your tour bus has a limited amount of space…)

RSS Feed

If you get obsessive about keeping in touch with your favorite celebrity you can go to an RSS Feed site as part of Twitter and see their entire tweet history. As an RSS feed subscriber you get updates emailed to you as soon as your favorite celebrity twitters.
