I first heard Jeremy Fisher on a recent Paste Magazine sampler CD that included the cut, Scar That Never Heals. This catchy, instant classic reminded me of Paul Simon’s Me and Julio Down By the School Yard and Blister in the Sun by The Violent Fems. Based on that single I had to acquire Jeremy Fisher’s 3rd album entitled Goodbye Blue Monday on the Aquarius record label.
Cigarette is the next most note-worthy cut on this album that reminds some of Paul Simon, Matthew Sweet, Crosby, Stills and Nash, and a tiny touch of Dean Friedman. There is also a fun Video of this single on YouTube that Fisher made himself for $60. It is a funky, homemade, part- claymation Video that is cheeky and charming. Album art for Goodbye Blue Monday and the Cigarette Video dovetail with similar imagery of flower petals that resemble feathers.
Jeremy Fisher’s songwriting is simple, elegant and sincere with a healthy dose of Go-Gos-like enthusiasm. This album is excellent driving music for your car sound system. Just don’t let Fisher’s bouncy toe-tapping, rock-out songs such as American Girls and Sula make you drive too fast. There are a lot of fun, pop music staples in Fisher’s songs like tambourine rhythms and raw-sounding hand claps.
Hailing from Ontario Canada, Jeremy Fisher is new to American audiences and had his TV debut on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson in August 2007. Fisher is currently touring Australia. I know I’ll be checking back to his site to see if he plans a tour of North America. As the music world continues to grow and expand it is harder to categorize a musical artist, but Jeremy Fisher’s music is part singer-songwriter, part folk music, part classic rock and roll. But don't take my word for it, you can check out Jeremy Fisher here.
You can see another homemade Jeremy Fisher Video here of the song Jolene, and it’s not another cover of the country standard by Dolly Parton.
