Pimp C (also known as Chad Butler) is a rapper and hip hop artist from Houston, Texas, who made his mark on the music world as half of a rap group called UGK (Underground Kingz). Pimp C. has influenced and worked with other hip hop artists such as T.I, Bun B., Lil Jon, Ludacris, Outkast, Master P, Nelly, Young Jeezy, Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Slim Thug, Webbie, Jay Z and Kanye West.
I know Pimp C from a killer cut called I’m Free that was on Pimp’s CD Pimpalation released in 2006. (Rolling Stone also named it a top-100 song from 2006). I’m Free is a neo-classic hip hop song that takes its sampled substrate from the classic rock Tom Petty hit Free Fallin’. This is the freedom song written by Pimp C as he was released after serving half of an 8-year prison sentence in Texas. This is a song about freedom, redemption and doing time in prison. (This song will also make you care dance if driving, so be careful!)
“…wasn’t nothing like Oz, a bunch of iron and bars, bunch of player hatin’ snitches, talking to the guards.” Pimp C says that he wrote over 2,500 songs while in prison and I’m Free was no doubt just one of the many.
Pimp C did time for failing to complete community service that came out of an aggravated assault charge. Pimp C was also recently found dead at the Mondrian Hotel in California at the age of 33. Two days after his death it was reported Pimp C received a Grammy nomination. It is sad to lose a successful rapper who could represent black men who have made it up out of the system to become creative and contributing members of society. And perhaps to contradict the stereotype of a gangster rapper, Pimp C appears to have died drug-free and of natural causes.
