Seduced: Art and Sex From Antiquity to Now is a new art exhibition at the Barbican in London, England. And it’s gotta be good because you have to be 18 to get in to see this amazing show that challenges the boundaries between art and pornography.
This well-reviewed art show features the works of a wide-range of artists, time periods and cultures. Included is the work of American artists, Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol and Robert Mapplethorpe. Also included is the Dutch artist and master, Rembrandt van Rijn, the English artist Francis Bacon, Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, and Japanese artist Kitagawa Utamaro. This art exhibition includes over 300 artworks and spans over 2,000 years and includes paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and photographs.
I like that Barbican likes to think “outside the museum”. On November 26 at 6:30pm you can go to the Cochrane Theatre at the University of the Arts, and experience Marina Wallace and Martin Kemp leading a debate on the topic of censorship, with a discussion that includes artists and commentators. Wallace and Kemp (along with Joanne Bernstein) are the curators of Seduced, so this is a great chance to get to hear their thoughts and ideas on the art exhibition.
There is also a Seduced: Sex and Censorship in the Cinema that will feature such classically sexy and seductive films as: Crash by David Cronenberg, Garden of Eden by Max Nosseck, The Piano Teacher by Michael Haneke, and Lolita by Stanley Kubrick.
But wait, there’s lots more. You can also take in a talk on The Sex Life of Plants, a sensual Aromatherapy Workshop, and attend a Quickie art talk guaranteed to last only 30 minutes. I can only imagine what’s available in the gift shop that would tie in to the theme of this steamy exhibition! Hmmmm.
Seduced is on view at the Barbican from now until January 27, 2008.
