Backing up computer's data is something that everyone needs to do, yet so many casual computer users completely forget about it until it is too late. Regular, incremental backups are made much easier through the use of free backup software programs. These programs back up data to an external hard drive, network drive, or DVD/CD-ROM. Many of these free backup software programs also allow you to schedule backups to occur automatically on a regular basis to make sure that the files in the backup set are fresh and the most recent versions that were used. The computer backup software programs mentioned in this article are some of the more widely used titles.
SyncToy
While SyncToy is not specifically designed to be a backup program it functions very well in that role. A free Power Toy from Microsoft, SyncToy does not come installed with Windows but is available as a free download from the Microsoft web site. After installing SyncToy a user tells the system what folders are to be monitored and to where those files are to be copied. From that point on, on a regular basis, the files will be incrementally backed up to the remote location. It is intended for use with things such as tiny flash drives but does just as well syncing from hard drive to hard drive.
Commodo Backup
For something a bit more fully featured Commodo Backup is consistently named one of the best free backup software programs around. It performs essentially the same functions as SyncToy but also includes the ability to back up files to aDVD, CD-Rom, or FTP server. It also includes the ability to notify of backup progress by email and the ability to compress the backup files to save space on the remote storage device.
These are just two of many different free backup software programs that a person can choose from. Regardless of which program you choose the important thing is to make sure that it is setup to regularly backup the files. Doing so will save you a lot of pain and frustration when your computer eventually has problems.
