Giving Ubuntu Linux A Try : Open in New Window
For those who want to find out how a computer really works and learn just how powerful and useful Linux based operating systems can be, Ubuntu Linux is a great place to start.  Ubuntu and other similar Linux distributions provide users with a free, low risk way to expand their mind and their understanding of the personal computer.

How To Get Ubuntu Linux:
Downloading Ubuntu is as easy as going to the Ubuntu web site and clicking a download link.  For most people the standard Ubuntu distribution is the one to download.  Other versions of Ubuntu are also available under names such as Kubunto and Edubuntu.  Each version of the software has specific applications or features.  Kubuntu is the same as the Ubuntu distribution but with a different desktop architecture while  Edubuntu is developed specifically for the education sector.  Any of these versions of Ubuntu can be downloaded from their respective web sites or they can be ordered and shipped on CD for a small shipping charge.

How To Install Ubuntu Linux:
Ubuntu and many other Linux distributions come on what are known as live CD's.  A person can load the disc into their computer, reboot to that CD, and the Ubuntu operating system will start up exactly as if it was installed on the hard drive of the computer.  Using this live CD a new user can try out the operating system and see if it is something that they want to try on a long term basis.  If so, the same live CD can be used to install the software onto the computer's hard drive and install a boot loader program that will allow the user to choose between Ubuntu or Windows each time the computer is turned on.
