Every day in emailboxes all over the world a new advertisement or email message arrives stating just how easy it is to make a living doing business on the Internet. Teaching people how to make money is a big business in and of itself, with thousands of web sites out there touting foolproof ways to make it happen. The truth about all of these sites is that while it is very possible to make money on the Internet, doing so legally and ethically requires three main main things: Good Ideas, Lots of Patience, and Incredible Perseverance. This series of articles will examine the basics of each part and how they directly determine whether a person will get rich quick or go broke in the process.
Good Ideas: What are you passionate about?
The vast majority of successful online entrepreneurs began by building a niche web site on a topic that they had vast personal knowledge of. A niche (pronounced nee-shh) web site can be thought of as a site dedicated to a specific idea, concept, or activity that people would like to know more information about. Many entrepreneurs take their personal hobbies or interests and turn them into informational sites on which they post unique, useful information for others to see and use.
Selecting a niche topic is more than just writing about a hobby. In order to have any chance of making money with your writings you must choose a topic that you have a vast amount of knowledge about and that you could write about for months or years without running out of ideas. For this reason your niche must be broad enough to provide adequate inspiration and new ideas yet narrow enough that you can show yourself to be a true expert on that topic. An example of an overly broad topic would be to choose the topic “Dogs.” A better, more focused topic with a much better possibility of success would be to choose “Golden Retrievers.”
