As mentioned in previous articles, private financial and other information can be easily stolen in both high tech and low tech ways. There are software based ways to protect a person’s data and privacy, many of which can be installed very quickly and with little cost.
Activate The Windows Firewall
All current versions of Windows come complete with a very basic firewall system known simply as the Windows Firewall. Chances are that it has already been activated on your system. Look for a small shield shaped icon at the bottom right of the screen. If that icon is not there, click on Start> Settings> Network Connections and then right click on Local Area Connection or on your wireless connection and select Properties. In the advanced tab of the new window click on the Settings button for the Windows Firewall setup screen. Windows Firewall is not perfect, but it is a good, free place to start.
Download A Free Firewall Program
Another great option is to use the very popular Zone Alarm Firewall from Zonelabs. This free download is more full featured that the Windows Firewall, but it does take a little more to set it up than does the Windows product. For business users and for individuals that want technical support a commercial version is also available.
ZoneAlarm is not the only firewall out there. Other reputable companies such as Norton often bundle a firewall program along with their antivirus or other software packages.
Turn On The Security Features and Hardware Firewall On Your Router
Most individuals now connect to the Internet through a modem attached to a small home network router. Most routers include a hardware based firewall system that, when activated, provides excellent protection from inbound attacks and hacking attempts. To turn on your routers hardware firewall check the owners manual or visit the manufacturer's web site. If you already know how to access the router's configuration settings then look around for firewall or security settings and activate them to prevent many kinds of security risks.
