Many online entrepreneurs give up on their online ventures after only a few months (or less). The cold hard truth about earning a living on the Internet is that in most cases, it will take at least three months of hard, dedicated work to even be noticed by the major search engines and many more months of continued work to finally get any significant traffic and financial benefit. There are reasons for this lag in time, and in most cases this delay is for the benefit of all Internet users.
Playing In The Internet Sandbox
Estimates are that every day thousands of people all over the world sit down at their computer and make a web site. Unlike ten years ago, it is now incredibly easy and fast to create an attractive web page in just seconds using a variety of online and offline utilities. Because it is so easy to create a web site thousands spring up every day. Of those thousands the vast majority will go dormant or disappear completely within three months. This is one of the many reasons that Google and other search engines utilize something called the “sandbox.”
In real life, creations that are made in a sand box are not considered very permanent. They are likely to go away or be discarded after a few days because their creators lost interest or really had nothing creative to build in the first place. On the Internet this sandbox keeps web sites on the fringes of public view until it has been deemed to be viable. Usually three months is the minimum for Google and other search engines to move a page out of the sandbox and assign it a Page Rank.
Getting Out Of The Sandbox
The best way to get out of the Internet Sandbox and start pulling in more traffic to a site is to get noticed by others. Since the search engines will not make this easy at first a good entrepreneur will actively go out and attempt to get other established sites to link to them through link exchanges and other means. As the number of links to a web page grows, so too does the page’s prestige and Page Rank. There is no real way to get around the sandbox effect except for having the perseverance to keep going even when a site seems to be going nowhere.
