When a person buys an LCD television one of the biggest considerations is how big the screen size should be. The same consideration should be given when a person buys an LCD monitor for their computer. Unlike with television screen sizes however, bigger is not necessarily always better when purchasing an LCD computer monitor. Large monitors can make the eyes get tired easily. Small monitors can have the same basic effect. There are many things that should go into the shopping process before a purchase is made.
Avoid Dual Use Monitors
A buyer should always remember that any monitor has one primary purpose, to display information in a way that is comfortable on the eyes while still providing a large "desktop" area to work on. Focus any monitor search on models that are solely dedicated to displaying data from the computer. Some manufacturers bundle video tuners into their monitors, allowing the monitor to be used both for computer and television broadcasts. The problem with these monitors is that often they attempt to be a jack of all trades and succeed in mastering neither of them. The larger screen sizes of such monitors (often 25 inches or more) seems ideal, but the resolution and refresh rate of such monitors often leaves a buyer with tired eyes after a few hours of use.
Can A Monitor Be Too Big?
The ideal size monitor for most home users is between 17 and 21 inches. Most users will be very happy with a 21 inch monitor if their desk is big enough. Avoid anything larger or smaller unless you have adequate opportunities to test it out in the store prior to the purchase. An exception to this rule would be the giant studio monitors made by Apple. Apple makes excellent extra large screen monitors that are compatible with both Mac and PC computers, however the price tag and computer requirements needed to run the monitor at high resolutions may cause some people to have second thoughts.
When shopping for a new LCD monitor screen size should be the most important thing to consider. Concentrate on finding a monitor with the largest screen and the highest resolution while still staying within budget.
