Windows 7 wallpapers are essentially high resolution jpg images that can be stretched to fill the screen under your icons.  One of the nice improvements to Windows 7 and the wallpaper selection process is the use of theme packs that allow a user to customize their desktop wallpapers and have them automatically change every thirty minutes or so.  Once the wallpaper has been chosen a user can go on to customize other aspects of the computer's desktop, saving the entire customized setup into a theme pack that can be used on other computers simply by emailing or downloading a copy of the compressed theme file.  So what exactly do windows 7 wallpapers and theme packs look like?  Anything that the user wants them to!

Where To Get Windows 7 Wallpapers and Theme Packs

Doing a simple google search for Windows 7 wallpapers will net thousands of hits, many of which are free to download and use, but to make a truly great looking and functional desktop a person must instead search for Windows 7 theme packs.  These windows 7 theme packs are available in hundreds of places, many of them being very unique and individualized themes created by amateur and semi-professional photographers.  Simply browse to one of the theme pack sites, click on one that looks interesting, and allow Windows 7 to open it using the theme manager application.  Windows 7 comes with several existing theme packs (unfortunately the one that the beta ships with is one of the least attractive so be sure to change it as soon as possible).  These theme packs have many different styles and types of photos in them, but other sites such as IntoWindows.  For those that have a bit of nostalgia for the old days (or who want to play a little trick on a friend) take a look at the nostalgia themes at Windows7News.

How To Make Your Own Windows 7 Wallpapers and Theme Packs

Making a theme pack from your own private collection of photos is very easy and can also be a great way for a business to promote itself if done tastefully.  To make a windows 7 theme pack simply right click on an unused part of the desktop background and select Personalize.  From the window that pops up you can manage your existing themes or you can save a new one.  To use your own images in a theme slide show click the Desktop Background button at the bottom of the window and browse to the folder on your hard drive that contains the pictures you want to use.  Then simply click the check boxes on each photo you want in the slide show and click Save Changes.

Back on the main theme window click the button that says Save Theme.  Give it a name and it will be saved as a theme pack and added to the list of "My Themes."  You have created a theme pack, but you cannot distribute it to the world just yet.  You must first right click on the new theme pack icon and click on "Save Theme For Sharing."  Tell Windows 7 where to save the file and what to call it.  The system will then copy the images and theme information into a file that you can send to others or post on your web site for download.
