The classic suit has been around for ages and is almost always an appropriate garment to wear, for both men and women. It gives potential employees confidence for an all-important job interview. It looks very professional when giving a presentation to a business group. And for going to a formal occasion, it’s always a smart choice. But is it still fashionable?
Modern trends have greatly changed dress wear to a more casual appearance, and many people are abandoning the suit, opting instead for dressy separates. But others feel it is still an essential addition to a well-stocked wardrobe. You may be among the many who are unsure of when and where to appear in a suit. One thing is obvious: it’s not the standard garment for the office that it once was.
You will have to consider your own lifestyle and workplace before deciding if you need to include a suit in your wardrobe. If you are unsure, get at least one nice suit and wear it as separates, one day the pants with a nice sweater, the next day the skirt with a fashionable blouse. If an occasion does come up that warrants more formal attire such as visiting dignitaries or an interview, you have the option of wearing it as a full suit and being prepared for the event.
Men need at least one good suit, even if they are working in a more relaxed environment. An attractive sport coat is less formal than a suit but still very appropriate for the occasions when you need something less casual, and is always a good investment. A jacket with three or four buttons lends a slimming effect and a classic straight collar completes the look. A turtleneck with a sports coat is an attractive option as well. Wear only dark socks such as navy, black or brown, and ensure your belt matches.
Women’s suits have changed from the rather boring basic styles of the 1980s and earlier and you will find many newer styles from which to choose today. You can get in touch with your personal preferences, your own tastes, and dress in a much more feminine style than was the result a few decades ago. Some bold new designs even have the pants featuring varying lengths, such as culottes or shorts, and colours are often pastels, with puffy or pleated shoulders.
The suit will always be with us, but you will find new and exciting ways to utilize it in your overall wardrobe that your mother or grandmother wouldn’t have dreamed possible. Get to your favourite store soon and look for a suit that makes you feel and look great.
