As we age, a few wrinkles appear, we lose muscle mass, and our metabolism slows, resulting in weight gain. But we also develop age spots, which are little brown patches that appear on hands, back and arms, especially on those of us who have sensitive or delicate skin.
You will likely develop age spots, or perhaps you already have, and they are not especially attractive so your first response is going to be to look for some way to get rid of them. Age spots are really not a sign of aging in themselves but rather are the result of exposure to the sun earlier in your life which tends to show up as we get older. They appear because the ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun has accelerated the production of melanin that gives your skin its normal color. The extra melanin becomes clumped in small spots. Tanning beds can cause the same changes.
You need to be assured that they are harmless, and if their presence doesn’t really bother you, then just ignore them. But if they make you feel unhappy about your appearance, if they undermine your self-confidence, and if you really feel they make you look older, you may want to do something about them.
Today a topical skin treatment using fade cream that contains a skin bleaching agent is available. It gradually lightens the age spots over time so they become less noticeable. Some fade creams contain hydroquinone while others are based on vitamin A, or Retinol, Vitamin K, glycolic acid and licorice extract and it depends on what is approved in the country in which you live. Whichever you buy, the important thing is to keep using it, even if you don’t see results instantly, as it may take several weeks.
You may also try a chemical peel which actually removes layers of skin, taking the age spots with them. You may need to repeat the process several times. By far the longest lasting method of removal is laser treatments. While it is costly, it is the most effective and long-lasting method of making the age spots disappear. Freezing, or cryotherapy, can be used as well by professional medical staff.

You can prevent their recurrence – or stop them from appearing if you are a younger person – by using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Purchase an anti-aging moisturizer with sunscreen which will also help to prevent wrinkles. Stay out of the sun during the intense mid-day hours, wear sunscreen and protective clothing during the summer, and enjoy your summer.
