You can make many of your own cosmetics and you’ll not only be saving money but you’ll also be able to eliminate the harmful chemicals that are often added to store-bought products. An excellent website at http://www.makeyourcosmetics.com/recipes gives ingredients and directions for many items.

Take conditioner for example. With an indefinite shelf life, a wonderful addition to your hair care using natural oils, wheat proteins, rose water and silk powder can be made. And some luxurious high-lathering soaps can be made at home as well, although taking a class through your local community college is recommended for first-timers. There are kitchen soaps, and others specially formulated for women’s skin, as well as hemp soap for men.

For added ease in making soap, premade soap bars are available which can be melted down, then your own desired ingredients for colour and fragrance added, before being molded and shaped into bars again with your own preferences. This is an easier process than starting from scratch, especially for the beginner, and the bars can be purchased in bulk, making it an inexpensive activity.

Shea butter and almond oil are among the soothing ingredients in a delightful foot balm which helps to keep your heels supple and smooth. And a simple combination of yogurt, aloe vera juice and an egg will sooth a sunburn if you or a family member should stay out in the sun too long.

Various oils and waxes go into making a thick and rich hand cream. It will also be a wonderful gift at Christmas or other times of the year, as well as being a delight for your own use.

Facial cleansers, lip balms, masks, and scrubs can also be made in the home. Many are made out of honey, oatmeal, strawberry, or cucumber and are not difficult to mix up on a quiet weekend morning.

But don’t stop there. Some makeup products are conducive to home-production too. Eye makeup remover is simply made in just a few minutes from castor, canola, and olive oils. Blush and powder can also be made from a combination of naturally-occurring mica.

If you are really into the natural movement, there are many non-toxic household cleaners you can make as well, which will be safer for you and your family than the chemically-loaded commercial products. Most ingredients are available at your local grocery stores or can be ordered online from secure sites and many can be grown in your own back yard.

By gathering ingredients to make your beauty products, you are carrying on a tradition utilized by your great-grandmothers, so the historic and cultural significance is satisfying. Even earlier in history, Mesolithic cave people used grease and castor oil to soften their skin. Lipstick was worn 5000 years ago near Babylon and olive oil was massaged into feet. Assyrians and Egyptians rubbed sand onto their skin to buff it smooth and tooth powders were being sold during the Renaissance, made from dried sage, nettles and powdered clay.

Be aware too, that you’re reducing pollution by using non-chemical products and reusing bottles and jars. Once the initial ingredients are purchased, you will actually be saving money as well. There are lots of good reasons to consider using your own kitchen to make many beauty and household products, so get started today and make yourself beautiful the natural way.
