Lots of people go to the salon to get manicures for a nice little pampering session. Doing a manicure at home on yourself can be just as relaxing and pampering if done right. Especially if you have the right stuff.

Here is what you'll need for great a manicure at home.

  • Time. Make sure that you carve out enough time so you are not rushed and your polish has enough time to dry. I like to watch a DVD like Under the Tuscan Sun, or Desperately Seeking Susan. An uplifting movie transports me to another world.

  • Have a drink handy and a light snack. I like to make myself a cup of peppermint tea and a small plate of fruit and cheese.

  • Set up a small table or tray with cotton, paper towels, nail polish remover, file and nail clippers. Remove your nail polish. Then cut and shape them as desired.

  • With an orange stick push cuticles back. If the cuticles are dry rub them with cuticle oil before pushing them back. Make sure to wash all the cuticle oil off and dry nails well before going on to the next step.

  • Make sure you have a base coat. I look for one that says it strengthens and won't turn my nails yellow. I like Sally Hansens Hydrating base coat.

  • Color is optional. I like to do a color usually but if pressed for time often skip it. Clear bottom and top coat manicures last longer and are easier to touch up. If you want a color go for it. Just make sure you do not let too much time pass between manicures.

  • Top coat is one of the most important steps. I look for a top coat that says it prevents chipping and dries my polish quickly. I like Out the Door. If you polish or manicure starts looking bubbly it usually means that it is time to replace the quick drying top coat.

  • Make sure to be in a place that you can sit and relax for a little while for your nails to dry thoroughly.
