Whether you are wearing blue jeans to a barbeque or attending a graduation party, you can step out in fine style if you choose the right accessories.
First rule: don’t overdo it. Choose one or two items from a list that includes jewellery, belts, scarves, or shoes, and you’ll look great.
If you are shopping for a specific occasion, it’s a good idea to wear the dress or slacks outfit to the store when purchasing accessories. If you are going on a picnic, don’t wear dressy jewellery such as diamonds, but have fun with a funky pair of sporty earrings that bring out the best in your outfit. If you are attending a sombre or formal occasion, keep the jewellery small and neutral and save your long, dangly earrings for another event.
Scarves provide a fun way to dress up, but do remember to never mix patterns. If your dress is chequered or flowery, choose a solid coloured scarf. And if it’s a solid colour, then you can have fun with a boldly-patterned scarf to make a statement. Then experiment with wearing it as a shawl, around your neck, or even over one shoulder, which is really dressy. A unique idea is to wear your scarf as a belt.
Colourful barrettes or clips in your hair can also add to your outfit. If you have long hair, you can have it styled into in a beautiful coif that will be very formal, or you can let it swing in a casual pony-tail for that trip to the beach or cycling. Headbands can also be a welcome addition to your wardrobe, sometimes matching your dress, other times complementing it nicely with varying colours or styles.
Shoes should first be considered for comfort and fit and only then for fashion. You won’t look cool if you are mincing your steps before the evening is over because they don’t fit well. Wear them around the shoe store for several minutes before purchasing to ensure they fit well.
Always choose the right shoe for the occasion as well. If you are going to be walking a lot, then a low heel is the best choice. If you are dressing for a formal or dressy occasion, remember that anything over two inches is tiring and can be uncomfortable after a few hours. There are many fashionable lower-heeled shoes that will complement any outfit you have that will allow you to enjoy the event in comfort. If you are going to be walking on uneven ground or for long distances you need good walking shoes as sneakers don’t add a lot of support. For a casual event, cowboy boots with jeans or a denim skirt create a fun effect.
Remember that dressy well and looking attractive doesn’t have to mean following the latest fashion trends. If you choose something from your wardrobe that makes you feel and look good, and add a few accessories for accent, then that’s the right outfit for you to wear. Step out confident and enjoy yourself.
