Curly hair has the reputation of being wash and wear. There is so much more to curly hair than that. Here are some real world curly hair rules to live by to make curly hair more manageable.

    • Curly hair is not wash and wear hair. Actually, curly hair should not wash their hair everyday. It is too drying. The most wash curly hair every other day or even every three days. Use a mild conditioning shampoo and a good conditioner.

    • The only straightening blow out someone with curly hair should do is a professional one. This is especially true for very curly hair. Otherwise it is as obvious as a toupee that a curly haired person is trying to go straight.

    • Everyone's curly hair needs good styling products. More specifically, silicone based anti frizz stuff, styling cream for curly hair and a good spray conditioner conditioner.

    • Curls should never be crunchy!!! That is so 1985. Stay away from gel and do not spray your hair with hairspray until it is dry.

    • Conditioner, conditioner, conditioner. Put it on in the shower, leave a little in your hair after you shower and get the spray kind as well. Make sure all hair products are somewhat conditioning. Curly hair is notoriously dry. Protect it. This will make curly hair less frizzy and more manageable.

    • To get those beautiful ringlets that makes everyone want curly hair, finger twist wet hair and let it air dry. Then use a curling iron on the front to smooth and define the curls. Use a blow dryer on the roots to gently give the hair some volume.

    • Use a blow dryer with ion technology and a curling iron with gold ceramic coating. Both of these smooth the hair cuticle and help prevent damage.

    • Trying to go curly after years of straightening can be hard to do. For support, find photos of women you think are pretty with curly hair, and tape them to your bathroom mirror. Celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Oprah Winfrey, and Debra Messing are all examples of how beautiful curly hair can be. Pictures will remind you that curly hair is very attractive.

    • Curly hair absolutely must have a hair dresser that knows curly hair. Often a good sign is that the hairdresser has curly hair themselves (and not a perm) and they have nice hair. Another way to find a good hairdresser is to ask someone with great curly hair who they use, even if it is a stranger at the mall!

    • Perms are always a bad idea. Whether to it is a perm to curl or straighten the hair it will damage the hair shaft and possibly cause frizzing. They really should be outlawed!
    • Never brush curly hair. Brushing curly hair makes it poofy and look frizzy. A wide tooth comb for making parts and sectioning hair is all that is needed.
