Picture this: you’re rushing around from one place to another or your traveling on a lonely highway and you find yourself famished. The only problem is your only choice for food includes gas stations or convenience stores.

Or, perhaps it’s after-hours and the only thing open is a 7-Eleven.

But, hey – that’s okay! It is possible to grab a healthy snack or mini meal and I’ll show you how!

Take a look at some of the following healthy items you can grab at most gas station or convenience stores and feel confident about your choices.

  1. Banana and Yogurt.
Most convenience stores stock some fresh fruit and yogurts in the refrigerator case. This protein and healthy carb combo will tide you over until your next meal.
  2. Clif Bar and Apple.
You’re more than likely to spot a Clif bar, which makes a great meal replacement when paired with a piece of fruit. They make a good pick because they’re contain a balance of carbs and protein, are high in fiber, low in fat and contain vitamins and minerals.
  3. String Cheese and Wheat Thins.
Keep an eye out for individual mozzarella cheese sticks and small packages of Wheat Thins. You’ll get a dose of calcium, protein and carbs.
  4. Granola Bar and Nuts.
Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Bars typically reside in convenience stores, as do 1-1.5 ounce packages of nuts. Grab a pack of unsalted almonds or peanuts and pair it with a granola bar for a satisfying meal with healthy fats.
  5. V-8 and Trail Mix.
Veggies may be hard to come by but you can always find a V-8 (choose low sodium if possible)! Down your veggies with a 1.5 oz pack of trail mix to help curb your hunger.
  6. Cereal and Low-Fat Milk.
You just might be able to find a single package of cereal or packet of oatmeal. Pair it with low-fat milk and you’re all set! Look for low sugar cereals and the more fiber the better.
  7. Jerky and Fruit.
Yes, beef jerky is high in salt, but it is also high in protein, low in fat and takes a long time to eat. Pair it with a piece of fruit and you’ll stave off hunger.
  8. Peruse the Frozen Foods.
Healthy choices may be slim pickin’s but it won’t hurt to look. If you can find a Lean Pocket or low-fat bean burrito, grab one!
  9. Low-fat Popcorn and Carrots.
Some convenience stores sell individual bags of low-fat popcorn and cut-up veggies such as baby carrots. You’ll even have access to a microwave!
  10. Meal Replacement Beverage.
If you’re really pressed for time, scope out the drink case for a meal replacement such as Slim-Fast. It’ll do in a pinch and will deliver protein, carbs, vitamins and minerals and perhaps fiber too!
