Healthy Thanksgiving Tips

Tip the scale in your favor this holiday season by using the following healthy and realistic tips.  The strategies below show you how to trim the fat from your recipes and save calories – all without sacrificing flavor.

Turkey Day Trim Downs - 10 Ways to Cut Fat

1. Cut the fat in gravy by refrigerating the juices (which will harden the fat) and remove the fat before preparing the gravy.
2. Mash potatoes with broth or non-fat milk instead of butter and whole milk.  Add roasted garlic for extra yummy flavor!
3. Skip the turkey skin and reach for the white meat.
4. Sweeten yams or sweet potatoes with fruit juice and spices instead of margarine and brown sugar or marshmallows.
5. Fill your plate with lower calorie items first such as green salad, fruit salad and fresh cranberry relish.  Visualize what your plate will look like ahead of time and stick with your goals or plan.
6. Give your stuffing a makeover by using broth instead of butter – a simple calorie and fat saver!  Make it even healthier by adding vegetables in place of some of the bread.
7. Keep an eye on the appetizers - appetizer calories can add up fast and you probably won’t compensate for them at dinner!  Serve or bring low-calorie, low-fat appetizers such as vegetables and dip made with non-fat sour cream or mayo, whole wheat pita wedges and hummus or low-fat bean dip with salsa and baked chips.
8. Use a smaller plate – this is a simple and effective strategy, especially for higher calorie/fat dishes that make their way to your plate!
9.  Modify your favorite pumpkin pie recipe by using evaporated skim milk and a low-fat graham cracker or gingersnap crust.
10.  Substitute low-fat, low-sodium soup in place of regular cream soup in casseroles.  Or, cut down on the cheese by using reduced-fat and half as much, use lean meat and add extra veggies.
