Prevent Cancer with These Diet Do's

Did you know that diet tops the list of preventative measures you can take to help prevent cancer and the number one risk associated with cancer death is diet?  Yes – all types of cancer. And, dietary changes are relatively simple when you think about it.  We’re not talking about life altering changes here either.  Rather, we’re talking about simple additions here and simple deletions there.

Read on and discover how you can defend your body from cancer:

Color your plate (or bowl!).  Don’t shy away from those fruits and veggies – the higher your intake, the lower your cancer risk.  Fruits and vegetables are chock full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which help ward off cancer.  When you’re walking through the produce aisle, don’t pass up these especially beneficial produce stars: tomatoes, spinach and other dark leafy greens, broccoli, cabbage, berries (all kinds) and red grapes.

Add a little spice.  Who doesn’t want a little spice in their life?  Spices liven up low-fat dishes and certain spices may even help prevent cancer.  Of special interest is curcumin, the pigment in tumeric.  It may help prevent melanoma, prostate and pancreatic cancer.  Try a little yellow curry (just use light coconut milk) tonight!

Buy organic.  Organic foods are free of pesticides, hormones and preservatives.  Some pesticides may be carcinogenic, so buying organic helps you avoid them and helps the environment too!  Choose organic for produce that is most heavily treated with pesticides such as peaches, lettuce and strawberries.  Make a trip to Farmers Market this weekend!

Choose healthier fats.  Limit foods high in saturated and trans fat such as red meat and fried foods and substitute healthier fats instead.  Nuts, salmon, avocado, olive oil and canola oil are healthier sources of fat.  Remember though, moderation still applies.

The dynamic duo.  Calcium and vitamin D are like best friends when it comes to bone health and they also both play a role in cancer prevention.  Calcium may reduce colorectal cancer risk and vitamin D may help prevent breast, ovarian, stomach, lung and colon cancer.  Add low-fat yogurt and milk to your day and get outside for a little dose of sunlight.

Take it easy on the beef.  Enjoy lean cuts of beef in moderation – a small portion once in awhile.  Higher beef consumption is linked with a higher risk of colon cancer.  Substitute poultry, fish, beans or soy.
