Back problems are reaching epidemic proportions with the ever-increasing numbers of people working at administrative professions. As well, many people spend hours at their computers, either working or enjoying games, searching the Internet, and e-mailing.

The causes for disorders of the lower back are numerous and include incorrect seat height and poor posture while seated at the desk. Often chairs do not support the back and computer screens are at an incorrect height.

Carrying an uneven load or bending from the waist to pick up a heavy object can result in problems. Driving for long periods can cause back pain. As well, excessive housecleaning in a short period of time is sure to cause discomfort. Caution is required if your job requires frequent bending or lifting, and care must be taken to avoid twisting your body when lifting or carrying an object. Never rush to pick up something heavy but take your time and use proper lifting techniques.

People who are not active and don’t exercise regularly are also more likely to experience back pain. Lower back pain is more common in overweight people as carrying extra weight causes more stress on the back which supports the weight of the upper body. Those with extra fat in the tummy area place even more stress on the lower back.

But with a little common sense, back pain can be prevented. First of all, you must increase back and abdominal strength and flexibility by getting regular aerobic exercise, such as walking or swimming. Secondly, when standing, maintain an erect posture to prevent the stress caused by hunched shoulders or rounded back. Your mother’s admonition about standing up straight is still good advice, as good posture is essential in preventing back pain. And medical professionals have been warning us for years about the dangers of high-heeled shoes, which put pressure on the lower back, so low heels are wisest. In bed, sleep on your back, with a pillow beneath your knees. As well as maintaining a healthy weight, ensure your diet includes lots of milk and other dairy products with calcium so strong bones are maintained. A good vitamin supplement will ensure you are getting Vitamin D, also essential for good bone health.

Finally, eliminate the stress in your life. It can cause lower back pain which can result in loss of sleep and irritability. Take some time for yourself every day to relax, and take frequent breaks from your desk or computer if you have to sit for long periods of time. Follow these sensible suggestions and you will be free of back pain and able to enjoy life for a long time to come.
