Have you hesitated to raise your arms for fear of exposing embarrassing sweat stains? Do you perspire heavily when faced with a new challenge, in the heat of the summer, or when working hard at the treadmill or at housecleaning?
Primary Focal is one of the two forms of hyperhidrosis, or overactive sweat glands, often starting in childhood, and occurring over the entire body but mostly in the hands, feet, armpits and groin area. It tends to run in families. With the secondary generalized type, fewer people are affected and it’s more likely to be linked to a health or medication problem.
The International Hyperhidrosis Society has been formed to be a source of help to those suffering from either form of the condition. In some people, the body’s mechanism for cooling itself is overactive, creating uncomfortable, anxiety-inducing situations, and can disrupt all aspects of a person’s life, from career choices, to relationships, to recreational activities and emotional well-being. The Society predicts more than three percent of people around the world are affected but many never seek medical help and simply suffer through many embarrassing moments.
If you are one of the victims of excess sweating, be assured that there are cures and treatments. First of all, experiment with different fabrics in your clothing. Some people find that satins and silks increase their perspiration. You might also want to stay away from form-fitting dresses and tops and do remember that dark colours show sweat less.
There are natural deodorants that seem to be effective, made with baking soda or corn starch. You might find drinking liquid ingredients such as tea made from aromatic herbs helpful. Eating less salt and more calcium-rich foods as well as consuming more complex carbohydrates have been found to be helpful. Cut back on onions and garlic as they increase the likelihood of an unpleasant odor when you sweat. Caffeine warms up the body and you may find some relief from excess sweating if you reduce or quit drinking it.
Your doctor may prescribe drugs or discuss surgery to remove the overactive sweat glands, called Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy, or ETS surgery. This procedure is usually reserved for patients with very severe symptoms who have tried other treatments without success. It permanently stops the sweating and it can have complications.
See your doctor before embarking on any cure for hyperhydrosis. With his or her help and by attempting some of the suggestions found here, you will be able to lessen or eliminate the condition and live a happy and fulfilled life.
