All parents at some time will have a child who develops a fever. Its the number one reason children are taken to their doctor. A fever is a response to illness as the childs immune system defends itself against organisms by raising the body temperature. The fever is a symptom that alerts the body that a viral illness is present. You can determine if your child has a fever if his or her temperature is over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius).

Frequently discussion arises about which thermometer is the best, and asking your doctor ahead of time which one she or he prefers is always a good idea. But a fever may occur before the question has been asked, so in addition to an oral thermometer, you need to know that there are mercury-free rectal thermometers which are very accurate but which should only be used in very young children as they are uncomfortable. If your baby or toddler uses a soother, a pacifier thermometer can be a good way to take your child's temperature. Ear thermometers are easy to use but can be expensive and shouldnt be used in infants as they dont stay still for long periods of time and there is a risk of possible damage. Temperature alone is not all that doctors want to know before suggesting treatment, so be aware that doctors will also ask about other symptoms as well before diagnosing your childs condition.

Children who are younger than six months old should see a doctor immediately but fevers in older children may be treated at home. Children may also complain of an earache, abdominal pain, and suffer vomiting, diarrhoea, coughing or a runny nose. The condition often lasts between one and three days. Childrens fevers can be treated by offering plenty of extra fluids and giving child-approved doses of acetaminophen or ibuprofen.(Always consult your doctor before administering any meds to your children)Pay close attention to the doses amounts on the label as they vary according to age and weight of the child. Dont hesitate to talk to your pharmacist or health care professional if you are unsure of any medications and never give aspirin to a fevered child as its been linked to a fatal disorder. Never give more than five doses in one day. Let your child sleep as rest is an important tool in fighting the illness. If the temperature doesnt appear to be lowering, children respond well to a bath in lukewarm water for 15 minutes. Never leave your child alone in the tub.

If your child is having trouble breathing, or cannot be consoled and is crying continuously, you should see your doctor immediately as some infections can cause a middle ear, respiratory, or throat infection. Other warning signs include a sore throat, stiff neck, severe headache, whimpering, earache, or a skin rash. If the fever lasts for more than three days, or seems to be going away and then returning, call your doctor as well.

All children get fevers, and most are back to normal within a few days. If they havent improved in 10 days, or if they worsen, its time to call your doctor. If you are ever in doubt about what to do or what a fever might be indicating, dont hesitate to call your doctor or pediatricianfor advice.
