Did you know that the principles of yoga and feng shui go hand-in-hand? The way you decorate your living space has the potential to influence the way you think, feel, and…practice yoga! In order to get yourself into that positive yogic mindset, the principles of feng shui can be really helpful.

The term “feng shui” has been thrown around quite a bit lately in reference to decoration. It basically means how changing the placement of your furniture, decorations, and other belongings can impact your attitude and overall frame of mind. When you are comfortable in your home, you give off more positive energy, so try changing a few simple things around the house to see how your energy changes for the better!

The Yin Yang Theory is an important part of feng shui. According to an ancient Chinese belief, the universe consists of the Yin and the Yang—two opposite (but connected) forces. In order to obtain the best possible energy, these two forces should ideally be in balance. The Yin embodies passive energy, meaning that it involves relaxation, darkness, and silence. In contrast, the Yang represents active energy that is characterized by strong colors, lights, and motion.
In our busy, frenzied culture, we often have an overabundance of Yang energy and not enough of the replenishing Yin. In order to make your home harmonious, you should have an equal distribution of both forces. For instance:

Yin energy is ideal in the bedroom because it’s the space where you need to relax and rejuvenate. In order to foster a silent and calming environment, you should get rid of some of the more excessive Yang elements in the room, such as a TV or work-related belongings. Think relaxation, sleep, and comfort when you’re decorating your bedroom. However, it’s also important to have some Yang elements in order to create some balance. Red candles and a few hotter colors will do the trick. When decorating your bathroom, the same principles apply.

Yang energy is perfect for the living room, kitchen, home office, and other rooms in the house that should have lots of vibrant energy. In order to feng shui these rooms, you can decorate with strong colors, books, games, and whatever else will contribute to keeping you lively and happy. Conversely, you should add a little Yin, or a relaxing element, into these rooms so that the Yang doesn’t become overly dominant. Try adding some cushions and particularly comfortable furniture in the room.

Before you start to decorate, think of the purpose of each room. Do you need the room to help you relax or entertain? When you’re through, you should have a home that will make you feel truly happy! And, of course, when you’re happy, you will have a great yoga session!
