For a lo t of us, attending yoga classes are not always the most convenient way to squeeze in a practice. If you find that you’re too busy to commit to a regular class regimen or if you are a parent (and therefore have no free time to do anything!), you might want to consider starting a yoga practice at home. That way, you don’t have to spend time commuting to class and have the freedom to start/end your yoga session whenever you want!

Even if you’re toying with the idea of starting a home yoga practice at home and don’t know where to begin, we’ve got some great ideas for you! One of the great things about yoga is that you can practice anytime and anywhere. You don’t have to belong to a yoga clinic or studio in order to reap the health benefits of a yoga session. In fact, yoga and meditation are great solo activities that are perfect at-home workouts!

Here are some ways to get yourself motivated—

Following along with a yoga video or recording is a great way to get started. Borrow a few yoga videos from your library and try a watching a few different styles of yoga. That way, you’ll be able to discover what style fits your personality without having to endure expensive classes.

Find a quiet place in your home to practice. It can be your bedroom, back yard, whatever. All you need is enough room to stretch out and place a yoga mat. Ideally, you should try to practice on a hard surface (as opposed to a carpet) because you’re less likely to injure your joints.

If you can, begin your practice while you are alone in the house. For many of us, this may be the hardest part of all, but the less people there are around, the less likely you are to become distracted.

Find your yoga groove! Make your space feel like a yoga studio by putting on some candles or dim your lights to set the mood.

It’s important to follow a regular yoga routine and not skip steps. Act as if you were in a class with an instructor watching you! Begin and end your yoga routine with a series of stretching postures and make sure that your body is fully warmed up before attempting any complex postures.

If you’re going to commit to a home yoga practice, make it a routine! Set up a regular schedule for yourself to practice yoga, even if it’s as little as 15 minutes a day. Remember, the more frequently you practice, the more yoga will become an important part of your daily routine!
