Sometimes you just wake up on the wrong side of the bed. You may wake up to an annoying alarm, feel dead tired, or are just in a bad mood. How do you get out of bed, conquer a negative mood, and be productive when the first few minutes of your day are miserable? The good news is that just because you wake feeling out of sorts doesn’t mean you have to spend your entire day upset! There are lots of mental and physical methods that you can use to boost your mood.

The technique of positive thinking is used by business people, politicians, athletes, and people just like you! Here are some ways that successful people use positive thinking to shake off the blues and continue on with their day:

Breathe deliberately – by practicing breathing deep into your diaphragm, you will be able to calm yourself down. While harnessing the power of your breath, think of all the things in your life that you are grateful to have. This will help to clear your head of any negative energy.

Scan your body – when you wake up, get into the habit of scanning your body to see if you’re still holding any tension from the night before. When you are in a bad mood, that’s just negative energy that is being held in the body. Once you recognize the parts of your body that are holding you back from having a good day, take a couple of deep, cleansing breaths and visualize the tension melting away.

Meditate – a few solid minutes of meditation help to shift your energy from negative to positive. Visualize this: with every inhale, you are taking in positive energy. With every exhale, you are relieving your body and mind of all the stress and anxiety that is plaguing you.

Get out of bed…again – if at first you don’t succeed, try again! If you step out of bed in a bad mood, try getting back into bed and lying down for a moment. Then get out of bed in a different way. Try getting out on the opposite side of the bed and see if it does anything to lift your mood.

Put on some happy music – put on your favorite song and dance along to the music. On the days that you need an energy boost, turn on a dance CD and see if you have energy left to share!

When you find that you’re battling negative thoughts, remember to be kind to yourself. Know that you CAN change how you think and that you definitely deserve to have the best day possible!
