Martial arts is a broad term for the self-defense techniques that were used in Asian countries, although many other cultures have established their own form of weapon-less combat. Primarily using hand and foot forms of fighting, these self-defense techniques also encourage its participants be very disciplined—in both the mental and physical sense. Through a series of steps, punches, and kicks, martial arts participants learn to connect with their body and establish strength and grace.

Martial arts can be broken down into five different varieties—stand up or striking styles, grappling styles, low impact styles, weapons based, and a hybrid sports style (also referred to as MMA or modern mixed martial arts). Though it is one of the newest types of martial arts, MMA is quickly gaining popularity in the West, combining a variety of fighting styles to create a full contact sport.

Some of the more well-known forms of martial arts include:

  • Tae Kwan Do – this traditional Korean form of martial arts stresses flexibility and speed with its fast-paced series of punches and kicks.
  • Judo – emphasizes hand to hand combat. Judo has become so popular that it became an Olympic sport in 1964.
  • Kung fu – is based on the movements of five animals: the dragon, tiger, snake, leopard, and crane. Because the basis of the practice is centered upon animal moments, grace and strength are an essential part of kung fu.
  • Karate – this form of martial arts focuses on fist combat and using the hand as a weapon.
  • Jujitsu – has its origins in Japanese forms of martial arts. Jijitsu was originally conceived to compliment the fighting style of the ancient Samurais, which emphasized weaponry.

While several martial arts movies like “Kill Bill” and “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” depict aggressive and hot-tempered warriors, the true teachings of martial arts emphasize humility and restraint. Fighting is actually seen as an absolute last resort!
