Diabetes and the HbA1c Test : Open in New Window

The HbA1c Test

Anyone with diabetes is familiar with the devices that check glucose levels in the blood.  This is part of the daily regimen.  But there is another test that should be performed periodically that checks how well the diabetes is managed over the long term.  The test is known as the HbA1c or sometimes as the A1c test.

The HbA1c is able to determine the level of glycosylated hemoglobin in the blood.  Glycosylated hemoglobin is a molecule in a red blood cell that is able to attach to glucose.  A diabetic has more of this particular molecule if the blood sugar levels have been higher over the last two or three months.  So it doesn’t give an indication of the blood sugar at the moment of the test; it gives a measure of the pattern of sugar levels over the last three months.  This tells the doctor and the diabetic how well the diabetes is being managed.

Using the Test to Control Diabetes Naturally

Some diabetics are interested in reducing their need for insulin and managing their blood sugar through diet.  The HbA1c test is very useful in this process.  While you are changing your diet, visit your doctor every three months for an HbA1c test.  If you are making the right diet choices, your HbA1c numbers should reflect that, and your doctor will advise you on adjusting your insulin accordingly.  During each three month period you should find your need for insulin reduced further and further.  If your HbA1c numbers rise, then either the diet or the insulin will need adjusting to compensate.

Summary

The Standard American Diet, known as the SAD diet, is the cause of Type 2 diabetes and is a contributing factor to all diabetes.  Any diabetic can lead a much more normal life by adopting a healthful diet and exercising more.  The HbA1c test is an important tool to help the doctor monitor the progress as a diabetic restores some or all of their body’s ability to produce enough insulin for their daily needs.
