Your local drugstore has little squirt bottles of nasal rinse but a more effective method may be at the health food store—the Neti Pot.  This method of cleaning mucus and dust from the nose is used daily in south Asia as part of daily hygiene.

The Neti Pot uses a saline solution to flush the sinus cavities.  The simple device is filled with solution and inserted in one nostril.  Holding the head over a sink or bowl, the neti pot is tilted so the solution flows in one nostril and out the other.  Then the Neti Pot is switched to the other nostril and the process repeated.  This can be done several times a day if needed.

Benefits of Using a Neti Pot

  • Generally improve sinus health.
  • Reduce the effects of allergies
  • Clear out sticky, persistent mucus and help reduce nasal congestion
  • Cleanse and rid the sinus cavities of allergens, irritants, and contaminants
  • Treat chronic sinusitis or rhinitis
  • Prevent common colds and flu
  • Relieve nasal dryness
  • Reduce coughing and other symptoms of post-nasal drip
  • Improve Yogic breathing practices known as pranayama
  • Clean the tear ducts, enabling better cleaning and moistening of the eyes.
  • Improve the sense of smell
  • Improve the sense of taste
  • Allow deeper, more relaxed breathing

Mixing the Neti Solution

The fluid used should be an isotonic saline solutions of 9 grams per liter of water.  Use sea salt or pure salt to mix the solution; using iodized table salt is not recommended because the iodine may irritate the mucous membranes.

Problems With Using Neti Pots

  • If there are hardened blockages in the sinuses several applications may be necessary to remove the material.
  • Water that is too cold, too hot, too salty or contains iodine may produce a burning sensation in the sinuses.
  • If there is a sharp pain due to pressure on the sinuses, stop immediately and consult a doctor.
  • If  there is ear discomfort blow their nose more gently after the wash.  If the problem persists, talk to your doctor.
  • Don’t use a Neti Pot during a nose bleed.
  • Follow medical advice regarding nasal irrigation after some form of nasal surgery.

Types of Neti Pots

There are many styles of pots available.   All work well.  The difference is just esthetic.
There are more sophisticated devices that pulse the solution into the sinuses for more effective clearing in a single operation.  However using a traditional Neti Pot twice a day over several days will effectively clean the sinuses.

Diana EllisInteresting, think I might give it a try. Where would I buy a Neti pot?

MaryRaymeYou can get a neti pot at a health food store or online. I use a straw as an improvised neti pot. Also make sure the water you use has been sterilized. I use water from my tea kettle which has recently had a good boiling but is cooled down. This is an awesome way to alleviate sinus congestion and pain.

Ron Frazer, Ph.D.It can burn if the temperature of the water is too high or if the salt isn't completely dissolved. So use clean water, not tap water, boil it first if necessary, then thoroughly dissolve the salt. There should be no unpleasant sensations.
