It’s kind of ironic that the idea of going to the spa for the first time can be so inviting and so repulsive at the same time.  We all have natural instincts that engage to protect our body from exposure, harm, and shame.  Those instincts make us modest, wary of public unfamiliarity, and ready at a moment’s notice for fight or flight.  Still, we have deep desires for our bodies to be the best they can possibly be.  We want to indulge our senses, abandon ourselves to relaxation, reward ourselves for pure diligence instead of just measurable outcomes, and be pampered and treated like royalty.  That’s why good spas operate with discretion and professionalism to give you the best possible experience and the results you seek. So what, exactly, are you afraid of?

Your own motivation?
Remember, your highest motivation is doing something good for yourself that will make your life more vital and fulfilling. Good spas know that.  They know that how you feel about your body is one of the most important reasons for coming to a spa. Your decision might be generated by your desire to make improvements and regain the natural health you once had.  It might be that you want to maintain the level of healthy skin and body that you’ve worked hard to develop.  It might be that you want to get back in touch with your body and with better attitudes and disciplines after giving birth, gaining or losing weight, overcoming a medical issue, or recovering from a stressful week or chapter in your life.

Lack of professionalism?
Good spas have well-trained, professional staff members who respect you and your body. The certificates and licenses on the walls don’t lie. Staff experts are highly trained in the physiology of your skin, muscles, nerves, and body structure. Trained technicians have knowledge of skin care and the formulated products.  They also have expertise in implementing, setting and monitoring the technical instruments used. The staff is also trained in how to help you understand the procedures and treatments and can answer questions. If you have doubts or questions, speak up.

Germs or a strange environment?
The environment, ambiance, and decor of good spas are based on the tested and proven benefits of relaxation, therapeutic touch, and a healthy, safe environment for you to find calm and restoration, as well as physical and mental improvements from the procedures you choose. Every licensed spa adheres to both strict legal and industry standards when it comes to cleanliness and hygienic, healthy conditions and facilities. They are held accountable for following the procedures outlined by the associations they belong to. You’ll probably also get to choose your favorite fragrances, music, flavor of tea or bottled water, the temperature, candles or incense, and even the color of your towel or robe. That’s not strange. That’s delicious!

Lack of modesty and discretion?
Yes, gaining the benefits from spa visits means you have to take off some or all of your clothes.  But be assured, good spas are designed for discretion that safeguards your privacy, with private rooms and screens, sheets, robes.  Your courteous practitioner will always cover all of your body except the small area being worked on at any given time. There are no surveillance or hidden cameras. The naked truth is that you’ll probably find more privacy and propriety at a spa than you might find at home, at the health club, or in a public restroom at the mall.

Out of control sensuality?
Yes, you’ll experience sensuality.  Your five senses will come alive as you relax into the treatments.  But sensuality is not sexuality at a professional spa. The procedures are conducted and practiced to give you both physical improvements and relaxation as you enjoy the smells, sounds, and therapeutic touch in a calm and safe environment of respect and professionalism. When your senses awaken, so do your mind and your mood. That makes great sense!

Being recognized?
Are you afraid someone might recognize you or see you without make up?  Well, think again.  First of all, it’s unlikely you’ll encounter another person during a treatment, since they are almost always done in a private room or screened area.  It’s possible, perhaps, to meet someone you know when you enter the reception area, but everyone will be completely clothed. Second, anyone you recognize is there for the same reasons you are. Actually, if encounter an acquaintance, you’ll create a mutual admiration society because you are both smart enough to take care of yourselves!

Be honest. Are you afraid to go or not to go?
If you have mixed feelings about trying the spa, ask yourself why. The reasons to be afraid are easily contradicted by the facts. Spas are medically developed, strategically designed, and professionally, hygienically, operated with modesty and discretion specifically for you and your body.  You will be comfortable and get the best benefits they offer.  Perhaps deep down, you should really be afraid not to try it! You don’t know what you are missing.  Just one spa experience and you’ll regret that you didn’t expose yourself to wonderful much sooner.
