Today while reading Google News I ran across this article. It says studies show that weight loss doubles just by keeping a food journal. Wow. In a cosmic turn of events yesterday I had decided to start doing just that. I am not sure I will track calories or anything. I just plan on writing down everything I pass through my lips. Just being accountable in that way makes me think about what I am eating. Plus, school supplies are on sale right now so this is a  truly cheap solution for weight loss in these tight economic times. Also if you like doing things on the computer you can simply use a word processing program.

There are also plenty of free places online to keep track of your food intake. So you never have to spend a dime.

Check out Spark People. This site not only will help you keep track of food intake it also has plenty of other features. This site can be a little time consuming but it is a great way to learn more about achieving a healthy life style.

Try the Igoogle Calorie Counter. It is still in development but it is simple and really easy to use.

If you want to know calorie counts you can use Calorie King. It is a very extensive list and is easily searchable. Plus, it includes many restaurants as well.

Now, I know what you are thinking, what does this have to do with yoga? Well this technique is right in line with one of the Niyamas in Ashtanga (the Eight Limbs of Yoga) called Swadhyaya. Swadhyaya means self study. When you journal what you eat you are practicing self study and you are on the path of yoga!

Here are a few tips for journaling your food intake.

  1. Keep the journal were you normally prepare the foods you eat.
  2. Write down what you eat as you eat it, not just at the end of the day. That way you will think about what you are putting in your mouth as you are doing it.
  3. Take time to review old journal entries for ideas on how you could cut calories, add healthier options and even just for ideas for what to eat in the future.
  4. Keep track of how much water you are drinking and the taking of your daily vitamin.
Extra Credit: Get a pedometer and keep track of your steps in your journal!
