Finding the right yoga mat is kind of important. A great mat that is appropriate to your yoga practice can serve you for a long long time. Here are a few things to consider when choosing a yoga mat.

  1. 1.Mat thickness. If take power or other similar classes where you stand a lot go for a thinner mat. If you enjoy relaxation classes where you are on the floor more get a thicker mat.
  2. Mat color. No, I do not mean that your mat must match your yoga pants. Remember that lighter colors may show dirt and stains faster. A really dark mat may show dog hair more. Also consider a color that is fun and maybe even somewhat motivating for you.
  3. Washability. Some mats clean easier than other. If you are going to use your mat often get one that is easy to clean.
  4. Maybe get more than one mat. There can be several reasons for this. First, you can stack your mats for some classes. Second, you can have one mat for home and one for the studio. This can be more sanitary. Thirdly, if you are doing yoga often, you can have one in the wash and you still have one for your practice.
  5. Find a mat that is environmentally friendly. It is true that they often cost a little more but, environmentally friendly mats are better for you (less chemicals), and out mother earth. Plus as an added bonus you'll be practicing Ahimsa, the first Yama! Here is one that comes in several colors and is inexpensive.

  6. You may want to invest in Yogi Toes. These are towels with little stick balls on them. These are especially useful if you sweat a lot.

*Tip: A Pilates mat is not the same as a yoga mat. They are generally thicker, too thick for most yoga classes. A Pilates mat can make you less stable in standing and balance postures.

Once you have chosen your yoga mat. Here are a few tips to protect your investment.

  1. Most mats can be washed in a front loading washing machine. A yoga mat can damage top loaders. Use cool or warm setting, not hot with your regular detergent. Hang the mat to dry. If needed most yoga mats can be put in the dryer on a low setting. Check with the manufacturer.
  2. If you do not have a front loader washing machine use your bathtub. Fill your bathtub halfway with water, add laundry detergent. Swish mat around. Take out of tub and wipe both sides down with a towel and hang dry.
  3. Spray your mat down and wipe in between washings. Clorox Anywhere spray is great for this.

  4. Be careful not to leave your mat in the car. Extreme temperatures can be very hard on yoga mats. They can become brittle and fall apart.

Now grab your mat enjoy your yoga practice!
