One man& rsquo;s junk can indeed be another man’s treasure. With the warmer months now upon us, many will enjoy either planning or visiting garage sales. Digging through your own closets to delegate and dispose of items can be strenuous, yet rewarding work. Others of us will either visit individual sales or map out routes to drive to hit as many sales as possible on a Saturday afternoon.
Should you be an avid scourer of other’s overflowing boxes, you can often find gems … outgrown baby clothes, duplicate pots and pans from couples getting married and ignored exercise bikes. These are all available at bargain prices as the owner simply doesn’t have the room for storage or doesn’t want to be reminded of the failed exercising program. There are ample treasures to be found and even more if you consider alternate uses for such items.
An ashtray doesn’t have to be just an ashtray. Why not set this on a table beside your front door and use it to store your house keys? Personally, if I did not have a specified spot for my keys, I would be forever losing them. With a little brainstorming, any number of creative ideas may come to mind.
One of those oversized pickling jars can be ideal to collect spare change. Empty out your pockets on a daily basis and your cash will quickly grow. Should you have children, involve them with rolling of the change. You can either pay them with a share of the profits or plan a special “family activity day” with your “found” money. You can also save your coins for pay-per-use laundry machines, parking meters and/or to shop at further garage sales!
Yet another idea is to screw hooks into a boat paddle and mount this to your cabin’s kitchen wall. This can add a rustic flavour to your home away from home and provide a perfect spot to hang your pots and pans.
So, with a little thought, you can easily breathe new life into your sale finds. And, in doing so, you’re helping to save such items from being needlessly dumped in landfills.
