Chinese take-out boxes have come a long way from moo goo gai pan. They’re the perfect size for a handful of candy or a small gift and they look beautiful on a dinner party table.
Chinese take-out boxes come in a variety of different colors, patterns and styles and can be personalized and adapted for any dinner party theme – Chinese or otherwise. Chinese take-out boxes can be made to look elegant, contemporary, dazzling, whimsical, or simply chic, with the help of some decorative fillers, ribbon and some creative added touches.
You can make these simple Chinese party favors for a dinner party, child’s party or any get-together.
Start With Chinese Take-Out Boxes
Years ago, I wanted to put together a party favor with Chinese take-out boxes and I had to go to a Chinese take-out restaurant to buy them. That’s hard to imagine now, when craft stores, party supply stores and the Web are chock full of Chinese take-out boxes in all colors and styles, made specifically for party favors.
Scanning the Internet, I found Chinese take-out boxes in:
- Solid colors, metallic and clear
- Stripes and polka-dots
- Gingham prints, holiday prints and with Chinese symbols
- In Asian designs, frosted and with circular bottoms
- Shaped like Chinese shirts
- Elegant with coordinating ribbon and personalized labels
- Downloadable and printable Chinese take-out boxes that you can design in a variety of paper choices or print them onto the cardstock of your choice. You cut, fold and assemble them, and add a ribbon for a handle .
Next Add Some Filler
If you’re filling the Chinese take out boxes with candy, mints or nuts, there’s no need for packaging filler. But if you’re putting in one or just a few items, a fortune cookie or other singular items, fill the box with decorative straw or other colorful fillers found in the craft and gift wrap departments of any store.
With the use of a paper shredder, you can make your own gift bag filler by shredding colorful tissue paper, the Sunday comics or any other paper that fits your theme and color scheme.
Then Add the Party Favor Gift
Use your imagination! Besides candy, nuts and pastries, there are many small Chinese theme gifts that are affordable and fit into a Chinese take-out box.
- A Chinese paper fan
- Fortune cookies, which can be purchased by the box from any grocery store or custom made fortune cookies ordered with whatever messages you choose.
- A Chinese New Year piggy bank
- Wind chimes
- A good luck coin or charm
- Chinese wish stones
Lastly, Put on Some Finishing Touches
If you’ve lined the Chinese take-out box with tissue paper, leave the top open. If you’ve filled it with candy or packaging filler, close the top and add a decorative ribbon to the handle.
For an added Asian flair, attach a pair of chopsticks to the top of the Chinese take-out box and attach them to the handle with a ribbon. Chopsticks can be personalized or ordered in many different designs.
