You can fill many a winter evening being creative with a new hobby that’s inexpensive and fun. And you can even make homemade gifts for Christmas and birthday giving.

Many crafts can be started simply and cheaply by borrowing a good instruction book from the library or getting on-line instructions. For example, knitting only requires learning how to do two stitches and following directions in a pattern. You can purchase needles and wool at your local craft store. It doesn’t take much practice to be able to make nice scarves for you and your family. A lot of beginning knitters make dishcloths and facecloths from cotton wool as well, thereby saving on purchasing these items. As you gain expertise, you will find you want to venture into more intermediate-level items, such as mittens, afghans, sweaters and socks. You can often find a group of knitters in your community whose members will be happy to share their knowledge with you and as a beginner it’s nice to have someone to ask questions. Crocheting is equally enjoyable but does have more stitches to learn. And don’t forget your sewing machine, as there is a great variety of small projects that can be accomplished in an evening or weekend, using patterns and instructions found on your computer, such as potholders, throw cushion covers, table runners, coasters, shopping bags, and even clothing items that you can make for yourself and your family.

Cooking is another great hobby that is sure to please your family and guests as well as bringing great personal satisfaction. Your community college often offers specialized classes, such as gourmet cooking, Chinese or Italian food, for example. Make sure you purchase the recommended tools so that you can duplicate the recipes in your cookbooks. Meals at home will be so good that you won’t want to spend your hard-earned cash on eating out at restaurants where the food is filled with preservatives and prepared in high-fat and high-calorie methods. And for gift-giving there are many baking recipes that you can prepare and put in layers in a jar. Decorate the jar with a pretty ribbon and attach the directions to the finished product. Kids love helping with projects such as building a bird house. You can usually buy pre-fabricated wooden parts at your local hobby shop or on-line. Make a few for your own back yard and then make several more for gifts. One birdhouse each weekend is a good goal, as you have to let the paint dry overnight before assembling the walls and roof.

If you have pictures that need to be put into albums, consider scrapbooking as a great way to spend quality time. Whether you are doing it for yourself, or as a family project, you can spend many happy evenings being creative as you honour special occasions such as birthdays, graduations, and summer vacations by mounting them in pretty scrapbook albums. Save your extra pictures and make a small keepsake as a gift for a grandparent or close friend. Scrapbooking materials are available at most hobby shops and you need to plan on some start up costs, with decorative scissors, acid-free glue, and paper, but considering the precious memories you are preserving and the many hours  you will pleasantly fill, you will likely consider it’s worth the cost.

What better hobby could you adopt than one which keeps you in good health! Consider the huge variety of fitness activities available today and try a new one. You could attend a class to learn Pilates, Zumba, or Belly Dancing, but there are also inexpensive DVDs that give you full instructions and that often have sections for every level of expertise. Check your TV guide as well, as there are usually a few exercise classes demonstrated on local cable channels. You’ll soon get in the habit of 20 to 30 minutes sessions as part of your daily routine.

Bird watching is a hobby that enthusiasts find addictive and enjoyable. Get yourself a good bird identification book and set out for a different neighbourhood of your city or region every weekend so see which live in your area. Remember that many migrate, so you’ll see different species at different times of year. Be sure you have plenty of bird feeders and bird houses in your back yard to attract as many of them as you can and you’ll spend many happy hours watching out your own window.

Learning to play a musical instrument is enjoyable too. There are many good beginner books and DVDs and you can buy an inexpensive keyboard or guitar at a second hand shop or through an on-line classified service. Ask amongst your friends to find someone who already plays and ask them for assistance as well.

Inexpensive hobbies are easy to find and fill many pleasant hours. Hobbies also keep our minds sharp and create a calm atmosphere in our homes as we enjoy being creative. Why not try a new one today!
