Whether it's a team banquet, a team party or just a sports-theme birthday party, a sports theme centerpiece will make the table and fill the party with team spirit.

For a quick sports centerpiece, party supply stores have aisles full of pennants, balloon holders, and sports related plastic and paper items that can be quickly and easily put together into a sports centerpiece.

With a little more time and creativity, try a more personalized sports centerpiece.

Candy Tree

Specialty candy stores have sports theme candies and lollipops. Buy a couple handfuls of them, plus some candy in wrappers (like individual life savers) in the team colors and build a candy tree. Using a cone-shaped Styrofoam base for the tree, insert the lollipop sticks into the cone base. Fill in the gaps with the rest of the candy, using push pins, found in craft stores. Some candies (like chocolate balls in foil wrappers) won't work for a candy tree, but those that are packaged in loose wrappers can be easily pinned to the base.

If you have teens at your sport theme party, they'll love to take candy from the centerpiece for dessert!

Grassy Field - for any sport that's played on grass or turf

You can buy a rectangular planter with artificial grass or make your own frame and lift out real grass and place it in the frame. Cut it with scissors so the grass is short and uniform. Now place toy football players, soccer players or cross country runners on the grass in a recreated mini game.

Ball Planters - for any sport with a ball

Find an old soccer ball, football, volleyball or other sports ball and cut a hole in the top. Place a planter if ivy inside and fluff out the ivy branches so they flow down the outside of the ball. If your plant is in a relatively small planter, cut the hole in the ball so that the planted bottom fits through, but the lip of the planter hangs on the sides, so the planter is suspended.

Athletic Shoe Balloon Base - for any sport

Gather up old athletic shoes from team members - the more worn and dirty the better - to use for this clever sports theme centerpiece. You can use football cleats, soccer cleats, running shoes, basketball shoes, baseball shoes, golf shoes or any other signature footwear for a sport.

Tie three to five helium balloons in team colors to the shoe base, either to the shoelaces or weave the balloon ribbons through the top eye holes of the shoe. Leave some ribbon at the bottom, below the knot, and curl them with scissors.

Baseball Diamond - for baseball and softball

Using a Styrofoam base, a piece of green indoor-outdoor carpet and some everyday craft items, you can build a miniature baseball diamond, complete with bases and players.  This Ezine article gives step-by-step instructions on how to build a baseball diamond centerpiece.
