The FDA has issued a 501K marketing clearance for the Evident Microwave Ablation System. The system is manufactured by Covidien and is intended for used in the treatment of non-resectable liver tumors. Covidien has been a long-term leader in the manufacture of oncology treatment products.
This new system offers an option for patients who have inoperable liver tumors and limited treatment options available. The device generates friction between water molecules causing heat, which coagulates the tumor tissue. This device does not emit any type of electrical current that is directed at the patient. The system can be used with laproscopic, percutaneous, and open surgical procedures.
The company can now move forward with training physicians to use the system. With this method, tumors can be treated in 10minutes, which drastically reduces surgical time and the time that patients spend under anesthesia.
