Researchers studied the diets of 16,000 persons in 52 countries and got some interesting findings. A report in Circulation Journal identified 3 global diet patterns. The typical Western diet, which is high in meat, salt, and fat accounted for thirty percent of the heart attack risk in any population. The prudent diet, which comprises of high amounts of fruit and vegetables, lower the risk of heart attack by approximately one-third. And the Oriental diet, which is high in tofu, soy and other sauces, made no difference in heart attack risk.

The typical Western diet has been known to contribute to heart disease, and this study reinforces that fact. Persons eating a Western diet have a thirty-five percent increased chance of having a heart attack   High sodium levels in the Western diet raise blood pressure and the high fat levels, especially the wrong kind of fats, clog blood vessels. The high amounts of salt in the Oriental diet seem to be cancelled out by other healthy elements of the diet researchers conclude.

The researchers also found that looking at overall eating patterns is more relevant than the specific types or kinds of food eaten. So, it doesn’t really matter whether you like pizza, or Canadian, or American cuisine, the important element is to forego the salt and fat in these foods in favor of the fruits and vegetables.
