A popular Staples commercial said it best—it’s the most wonderful time of the year! The nominations for the Video Music Awards, one of the most controversial and star-studded events in Hollywood, were released last week. And guess who received SEVEN nods from the academy, including one for Best Video of the Year? It seems like Miss Britney Spears is baaaaack.

The singer/hot mess will be competing against some of the greatest acts of 2009, including the likes of Beyonce and Lady Gaga. So, what is the famous video that everyone is talking about? None other than Brit’s “Womanizer”, which received several accolades for displaying Spears’ wide range of acting skills. In the video, Spears makes photocopies of her naked bottom after strutting around an office in a black wig, caresses her half-naked body, and seduces a man in the back of a limo. We’re sensing a theme here, but don’t laugh, it must have been really tough, y’all!

Of course, her nomination doesn’t come without complaints. Is a video like “Womanizer” worthy of the Best Video of the Year award? One insider speculated that “Britney always draws an audience”. Well, shoot, did she get nominated because she went nuts a couple of nuts back? Is this all a big scheme to get ratings? Say it ain’t so!

Perhaps there is some grain of truth to the rumors. After all, the Princess of Pop is notorious for lip-synching during her performances, but the nominations might very well be sympathy nods in her favor since she seems to be doing better on the mental health terrain. And, let’s face it, every network is hurting for an audience these days.

Let’s flash-back for a moment to the 2007 VMAs, where Britney gave the most bizarre performance of her career. The troubled star put on a show that made her appear sedated or drugged, and made us really worried for her mental health. However, her appearance at last year’s VMAS (note: she just accepted an award, she didn’t actually perform) proved to be ratings gold, thanks to her over-hyped ‘comeback’.

The Video Music Awards are scheduled to take place in New York City on September 13th, and it is unclear whether we’ll be seeing Britney dance and move her lips or just politely accepting a (potential) trophy. We wish Britney all the best, but a word to the wise: please stop hanging out with Lindsay Lohan.
