In a shocking (or not shocking) surprise Jon and Kate have announced they have decided to divorce! The show started with hints of an announcement. Later, they announced they would separate, but near the end of the 1 hour special, words flashed on the screen to announce that today, June 22, legal proceedings have begun to dissolve the 10 year marriage.
In Monday's episode, the couple talked about where their relationship stands. Kate says she is "tired of smiling on the outside and crying on the inside." Jon bluntly stated that the couple has nothing in common, not even a friendship. Looking sad and tearful, Kate said she admits that it is not something she is looking forward to and that she does not really like the idea of being alone.
The episode started with the Gosselin's building "crooked houses", play houses, for the kids. Jon decided to put the houses up in the woods, much to Kate's concern. Kate was visibly nervous about telling Jon that having the houses built out of site and far from the main house was not going to work. After convincing the builders to talk to Jon, Kate convinced Jon to change the location of the houses. Apparently they had a rough day off camera, but Jon did appear to take the change in stride and said that his clearing the land made a great spot for camping.
Kate will remain at the house with the kids and Jon will visit on his days. The kids will not go back and forth between the parents.
"While I know it will be hard for them ....and it's very very difficult, it is going to be the best and the most peaceful, I'm hoping, for them," says Kate. "We'll find happiness in this somewhere."
Jon says "I won't be here everyday. I'll miss them a lot."
What will happen to the series next? No one is completely sure yet. Kate says the show will continue and Jon says he will be involved, but "who knows".
Sadly, Kate says that she feels she is afraid of what this means for the kids as they realize that the family has become another statistic and on some level she feels she's failed.
