The rising price of gas seems to be on everyone’s minds these days.  With gas up around $4.00 per gallon in the US and averaging around $1.40 per litre in Canada, many drivers are asking what they can do to cut their fuel costs.  And at what point is it worth it to trade in the SUV for a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

Before investing in a new vehicle, consider these tips that can help you get better gas mileage.

1. Slow down

Driving at a consistent speed not only makes it safer for everyone, you can cut your highway mileage by 33 percent and your city mileage by 5 percent.

2. Get rid of unnecessary weight

Driving around with an extra 100 lbs. could decrease your fuel efficiency by 2%.

3. Avoid keep your vehicle idling

When you idle your vehicle, you are not only wasting your gas but you are adding carbon emissions to the environment.  Shut your vehicle off if you are waiting for longer than a minute or two.

4. Use overdrive gears

Overdrive gears save gas and reduce wear and tear on your engine by reducing the engine speed.

5. Tune Your Engine

Did you know that you can improve your gas efficiency by as much as 40 percent by repairing serious maintenance issues like a faulty oxygen sensor?  Even if you just give your car a tune up, you can improve your mileage by 4 percent.

6. Change air filters

Check your air filters regularly and replace them when they are dirty.  This could increase your gas mileage by up to 10 percent.

7. Keep tires inflated to proper pressure

By simply keeping your tires inflated to the correct psi, you can increase your gas mileage by 3.3 percent.  This will also keep increase your safety.

8. Use motor oil designed for your engine

Make sure you use the correct motor oil that has been designed for your engine.  The benefit to your fuel economy is about 1 to 2 percent.

9. Keep use of roof racks to a minimum

The aerodynamic drag from a heavily loaded roof rack can decrease your fuel efficiency by 5 percent.  If possible, put extra items in the trunk of the car or just travel lighter.

10. Avoid unnecessary trips

Whenever possible, walk, bike, take the bus or car pool.  Save money and help the environment at the same time.

If buying a new energy efficient vehicle is not in the budget this year, try saving money on gas by implementing the above tips.  Or if you have two vehicles, you can help yourself and the environment by parking the gas guzzler and driving the more fuel efficient car.   Going green may involve changing your driving habits but it will be worth it.
