When the school year has ended, many children and their parents look forward to the summer.  Usually in the middle of summer as parents we starting hearing the infamous words from our children, "I'm bored."  There are a lot of things that your child can do during the summer.  One thing that your child can do is make crafts.  The book titled BIG Book of Kids' Crafts created by Better Homes and Gardens , can provide you with some ideas.

The Big Book

This big book provides directions to parents and their children on how to make over 300 arts and crafts projects.  These crafts were developed for four to twelve-year-olds to make.  Many of these projects are made from items that you already have at home such as markers, paper, scissors, tape, construction paper, felt, paint, etc.  For the rest, you can find the necessary materials at your local-arts and crafts-store or discount store.  Your child will keep busy in making these crafts and there are many for him or her to choose from as listed below:

  • Cards
  • Family Puppets
  • Jewelry
  • Yo-Yos
  • Flowerpots
  • Caps
  • Candles

If your child wants to focus on a particular type of craft, this book is divided into the following themes:

  • Creating with paint and markers
  • Making things with paper
  • Go outside to find things to make with them
  • Sculpting with clay and beads
  • Making something brand new (focuses on jewelry)

My 2 Cents

This book provides a variety of options for children to choose crafts that will interest them as well as be age appropriate.  There are so many things for a child to choose from this book that I don't think you will be hearing the words, "I'm bored."  I wish that the co-authors of this book would divide this book not by type of craft, but rather than by age.  When you have many children, it is important to either find crafts that are age appropriate or ways to modify the crafts so that all children can participate in them.  Overall I was impressed with this book and will have to have my children try them out as well.
