Besides selecting the perfect Halloween costume and trick-o-treat pail, children love to help with designing their special pumpkin for Halloween.  Helping your child design his or her Halloween pumpkin can be challenging.  It is important to know that your child and you have several options.

Pumpkin Options

Many people think that the only way to decorate a pumpkin is to carve a face on one side.  This is not true.  Listed below are some of your options in regards to decorating your child's Halloween pumpkin:

  • Carve a face on one side of the pumpkin
  • Carve a logo on one side of the pumpkin (i.e. your school or favorite sport's mascot)
  • Carve a design on both sides of the pumpkin
  • Paint a face or design on one side of the pumpkin

It is important to remember that you can also purchase an artificial pumpkin from your local retail or arts and crafts store.  This type of pumpkin has a light bulb inside of it and you can plug it into an outdoor plug.

Pumpkin Decorating Supplies

There are several basic supplies that you should consider in having prior to designing your pumpkin.  Listed below are the recommended supplies that you may need to decorate your child's pumpkin:

  • Newspaper (place this under your pumpkin)
  • Pumpkin
  • Permanent marker (Use this to draw your design on the pumpkin prior to carving or painting it)
  • A knife (for carving)
  • A metal spoon, ice cream scoop, or commercial pumpkin scoop
  • Waterproof paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Paper towels
  • Pattern (if you are using an already prepared pattern)

If your child and you are trying to determine which pattern or design to use for your pumpkin, listed below are some websites that may assist with this task:

Helping your child carve or paint their Halloween pumpkin is a fun activity.  Make sure you ask for your child's input regarding what and how your child wants to design it.  Remember, decorating the pumpkin is just as important as choosing the perfect Halloween costume.
