On August 8, 2008, everyone in the world will focus their attention on the Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.  This is a great opportunities to learn about what the Olympics is, its' history, and what it is about.  There are many things that you and your child can do.  Many of these activities can be tied into your daily watching of the different Olympics' events.

Olympics - What is It?
The first Olympics was held in 776 B.C. in Olympica, Greece.  At this first Olympics, there was only one event.  From there the Olympics was held every four years.  During these ancient Olympics games, male athletes could compete in the following sports: boxing, discus, equestrian activities, javelin, jumping, pankration, pentathlon, running, and wrestling.  Things have changed since then due to the large variety of sports and events to compete in as well as having both men and women compete in events.  If you and your child would like to find more information about the Olympics as well as its' history, you can research further by searching the following websites:

A way to get children even more excited and involved with the upcoming Summer Olympics is to have them participate in different activities as well as arts and crafts projects.  There are many things that your child can do and create to celebrate this special time.  Many of these activities and projects also provide a connection with what your child has learned or seen on the television regarding the Summer Olympics.  Listed below are several websites that provide great ideas on different things that your child can do or create:
