As our children grow up and become more independent, we try to find ways to keep in touch with them.  In addition to talking with them in person, another way is by calling them via a cell phone.  Cell phones can become quite useful in knowing where they are as well as feeling reassured that they can call us in case of an emergency.  They can be used by children in elementary school through college.

Pros of Cell Phone Usage
The following is list of the many benefits of providing your child a cell phone:
  • Provide instant communication between your child and you
  • Allows your child to contact you in case of an emergency
  • Have different cell phone plans and phones to choose from
  • Can text message as needed
  • Have opportunities to be used before or after school (check with your child's school policies regarding cell phone usage)
Cons of Cell Phone Usage
There are several negatives about providing a cell phone to your child listed below:
  • Can interrupt learning at school if phone calls or text messaging occurs during school day
  • Can cause increase in cell phone bill if cell phone usage and texting is not monitored
  • Provide the possibility that your child could get in trouble at school if cell phone is used during class time
Cell Phone Tips
After considering the pros and cons of having your child use a cell phone at school, it is important to consider the following:
  • Contact your child's school to find out what their cell phone policy is
  • Review the school's cell phone policy with your child
  • Determine whether or not your child is responsible enough to use a cell phone correctly
  • If there is no policy, discuss your expectations with your child
  • Discuss when and where it is okay to use the cell phone
  • Share information with your child what your cell phone plan is and how it impacts them (i.e. how many minutes they have to talk, whether or not there is additional charges for texting, etc.)
  • Show your child how to use the cell phone correctly

Only you can make the decision whether or not to allow your child to use a cell phone at school.  There are

several pros and cons

to take into consideration before you can make that decision for your child.  When you do make your decision, make sure to explain your decision to your child.  This decision should not be based on your child whining or making the comment, "But all my friends have one."
