Finding the Right Childcare Provider : Open in New Window

Finding the right childcare provider that will provide a loving, nurturing, safe environment is a difficult task in itself. No matter what age a child is, parents have many options. It is also important no matter which option that you choose that you considering the following to make the right choice: reliable references of the childcare provider's previous childcare experiences, certification (Does the provider have training in areas such as First Aid, CPR, etc.?), safe environment, personality of the provider, location, rules (i.e. how various situations are dealt with), and cost.

Before making your final decision it is important to look at each option listed below. This decision is one of the most difficult ones that you will need to make as a parent. Take your time to look into each.

Day Care Centers:
  • Provides childcare to children ages 6 weeks to 7 years old (this will vary among different day care centers).
  • Staff have a minimum of a high school diploma.
  • Can provide various activities for all children depending on age (i.e. preschool on site, field trips, transportation to and from elementary school).
  • Children are divided up by age.

In-Home Childcare:
  • Provide childcare to small group of children (maximum 5 to 14 depending certification).
  • Some in-home childcare are state registered where others may not be.
  • Childcare provider has to be at least age 18.

Nannies:

Before & After School Programs:
  • Provide childcare to elementary school aged children before and after school.
  • Many children may attend as long as enough adult supervision is provided.
  • Before and after school programs can be provided in variety of settings (including a child's home school).

There are many options that parents should consider when trying to find the right childcare provider for their child. It is not only important to look at each option, but to truly research each.
