As a stay-at-home mother I am trying to find ways to bring in a little extra money to help support our family of six.  I decided a year ago to stay at home with my four children due to the high cost of childcare as well as having a difficult time finding quality childcare.  At this time I am a freelance writer for Lestout and this summer tutoring children a couple days a week.  I enjoy writing for Lestout as well as teaching children, but I am always wondering what else is out there for a stay-at-home mom.

Five Money Making Businesses

After doing a little research through the Internet and talking to other stay-at-home mothers while I do my weekly garage saling, I have learned that there are five different money making businesses for stay-at-home moms as listed below:

  • Freelance writing jobs (i.e. writing short articles or reports, editing articles, etc.)
  • Develop and/or write for websites
  • Salesperson (i.e. contact a business such as Mary Kay, Tupperware, etc. and have parties to sell their products)
  • Tutor at home or online (mostly for postsecondary)
  • Transcription

Things to Consider

If you are considering to find employment that you can do from the comfort of your home, there are some things that you should be aware of as listed below:

  • Make sure that the business is legit
  • Prepare a resume
  • If the business requires you to pay a large amount of money to pursue employment, be leary
  • Find out if you can have flexible hours or are they already determined for you
  • Contact the business to find out if you need to receive additional training for the job as well as how, when, and where that will happen
  • Determine what will be your working area in your home

Working from home can provide many new opportunities for you as well as an extra source of money.  In these tough economic times, everyone could benefit from it.  These five money making businesses for stay-at-home mothers can also allow you the ability to stay home with your children.
