When you have made the decision to go back to work after being a stay-at-home mother for a long period of time (one year or more), there are several things that you can do to get yourself back into the world of work.

Tip #1: Write a Resume

It is important that you write a general resume to submit when applying for a job.  Once you have it written look at samples of resumes on the Internet and/or ask a friend or family member to look over it for you.  It is always great to get a second opinion on how to improve it.  When you start to apply for different jobs, you can change your resume to fit each job (i.e. the employment experiences, etc.).  Never estimate your job experience of being a stay-at-home mother, you can use that experience to add to your different strengths, experiences, etc.

Tip #2: Stay in Contact

Stay in contact with old coworkers, family friends, and family members.  Let them know that you are searching for work outside of the home and could use some help.  Another way to stay in contact is by using a variety of Internet social groups such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.  I have heard of several people finding out about jobs that are not posted in the newspaper this way.

Tip #3: Apply

Once you have found out about a job opportunity, apply.  Don't hesitate or wonder, "Am I qualified to do this?"  Just go for it.  This approach works for everyone, even people that are not stay-at-home mothers.  Look at what you are passionate about, what you want in a job, what type of hours you want to work, type of benefits your family needs, etc.  If you are interested in it, apply.

Tip #4: Prepare for an Interview

When you receive a phone call that a possible employer would like to interview you, don't worry.  Make sure to ask what type of interview it will be (individual or small group).  Research the business by using the Internet and/or reading handouts or brochures made by the business.  Think about possible questions that the employer may ask (Why do you want to work here?  What are your strengths?  What words would you use to describe yourself?  What would happen if....?).  Practice answering questions for the interview (some employers will provide the questions to you in advance).  Find an outfit that is appropriate for an interview.

Tip #5: Don't Give Up

With this tough economy it may seem like an difficult task to find a job outside of the home after working from the home for a year or more.  There are many people looking for jobs.  It is important to figure out what you want to do and how to "market" yourself.  Then apply, apply, apply.  Don't give up.  Keep those that you have been in contact with up-to-date with how your job search is going.  You will find a job, it just takes time and perseverance.

Going back to work after being a stay-at-home mother for awhile may seem like an impossible task.  It isn't.  I know of many stay-at-home mothers that have succeeded in going back to work and finding a job that they love.  If you find out about a job that you would like to applyfor, but are unsure about going for it, just do it.  You never know what will come out of it.  As I say it doesn't hurt to try.  If you don't, you never know if you missed out on a great opportunity.
